Looking for advise...We have a doe who is due in a week.  She is caring a lot of weight.  Yesterday I noticed her front legs looked swollen and having some difficulty walking.  She is penned in a 12x10 or so pen.  Any advise will be helpful.  Thanks

If possible she needs a bigger pen so that she can get more exercise.

I would start by giving her some cayenne pepper. I top dress this on their feed and they will eat it. Most of my girls actually like it to it isn't a big deal to give it. This will help with the swelling of the legs and feet, as it increases circulation.

She needs more energy during this time so if possible make sure she has food available so she can eat when she wants to. She can't eat very much at a time because the babies take up most of the room and her stomach can't hold as much food.

Another thing that works well is Magic. the recipe for that is 1 part black strap molasses, 1 part corn oil, 2 part Corn Syrup, 5cc Fortified B Complex..Mix it all up in a jar and warm it up so that you can mix it well. If you don't have fortified B-Complex then use 5cc B Complex and 1cc Thiamine. This is given orally. I usually use the Grandma's brand molasses because we can't get black strap here.

It may also be a slight calcium deficiency so give her 30cc of the liquid CMPK, I think it is called Oral Cal-MPK or something like that. Or you can get Cal-Dex from your vet. I prefer the Cal-Dex, but it really doesn't make any difference. Also you can feed her good quality Alfalfa hay for extra Calcium.

I also forgot that we give Red Raspberry leaves the last 2 weeks of gestation to help tone and strengthen the muscles used for kidding. They do not induce labor nor do they make the kidding go faster, just more efficient and better timed contractions.

It is never too late to start raspberry leaves or cayenne. Even if it is after they are already in labor, you can drench them with raspberry tea and cayenne and it will still help.

Also the cayenne will help stop any bleeding that may occur from a difficult birth. i always drench with raspberry and cayenne tea after kidding to help with any bleeding and also to help them expel the afterbirth faster.

Thank you so much for your help I sure do appreciate it.  Those babies were born today, thank goodness.  I am going to store the info for next time.  I was told that the swelling will go away after they give birth.  Has that been your experience?  Thanks again.

The swelling actually dose go away somewhat after kidding. I would go ahead and do the cayenne as it will help her get her strength back faster. I would also let her have anything she wants right now, alfalfa hay, feed etc.

The swelling should go away quickly, like within 24hrs if it doesn't then you need to start the Magic and calcium as fast as you can because it could be the start of ketosis.

Not likely though, seems like it was just the typical late gestation swelling.

I am glad the babies and mom are doing good.
